Whole Body Cooling and Neonatal Injuries

Our Attorneys Support Families

Doctors need to act fast to effectively treat neonatal injuries. This is especially true for newborn babies born with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), a type of brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation.

In recent years, physicians have been able to reduce the damage to a newborn's brain caused by HIE through a process known as whole body cooling. But in order for this treatment to be effective, doctors need to perform this procedure immediately when there are signs of HIE injury.

Unfortunately, medical professionals sometimes make mistakes. That's why it's important to contact a birth injury lawyer as soon as possible about your potential case.

What Is Whole Body Cooling?

As the name of the procedure implies, whole body cooling is a procedure in which doctors cool an infant's body in an effort to reduce the potential damage to newborns caused by Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE).

The procedure should ideally be performed within several hours of a child's birth. Once the newborn's body temperature has been lowered, physicians keep the baby's body temperature lower than normal for three days. By doing so, the newborn baby's metabolism slows down and the severity of disability may be reduced.

During the whole-body cooling process, medical professionals must carefully monitor the newborn baby's heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, brain activity, and other vital signs. And if doctors notice anything unusual, they need to immediately take corrective measures to restore the child's health.

We Can Help

When your child has received whole body cooling after delivery, that is strong evidence that they suffered a brain injury during labor and delivery.

Physicians and other medical professionals almost never admit malpractice. Even if they do, the hospital they work for or the insurance company covering them is unlikely to provide for the long-term care your child will need as a result of their errors.

Our law firm knows how to hold medical professionals accountable for their actions. We have decades of experience and the case results to prove it. And since we only handle a select number of cases and focus only on birth injury cases, you know your family's best interests will come first here. Find out how the Tyrone Law Firm, PC can help you.
