Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)

Birth Injury Attorneys Explain

As the name of this maternal risk factor implies, a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) refers to a baby delivered vaginally after the mother's previous child was delivered via a cesarean delivery, which is also known as a C-section.

There many reasons why mothers choose to have their second or later child using the VBAC method. In particular, many medical professionals are concerned about performing a second C-section and creating additional scar tissue on the mother's uterus.

But doctors and hospitals that deliver a baby using the VBAC method need to be aware of the potential risks to the mother and her unborn child. And if any complications occur, they need to be prepared to perform an emergency C-section for the health and well-being of the mother and the child. That's why VBACs are considered a birth injury risk factor.

Risk Factors

If your doctor recommended a VBAC delivery, you mostly likely had what is often called a "trial of labor after cesarean" (TOLAC), in which you went into labor and intended to deliver your baby vaginally.

But not all VBAC deliveries go as planned. That's why many hospitals choose to perform an emergency C-section. Otherwise, many serious health problems could occur, including the existing C-section scar tearing open during labor.

If the existing C-section scar tears, heavy bleeding can occur. The risk of infection and brain damage to the unborn child is also high. Doctors need to be aware of these risks and react quickly to save the mother's life and prevent health problems with the unborn child.
