KERNICTERUS/BILIRUBIN
Even the smallest health problems can have serious health consequences when it comes to newborn children. That’s certainly the case when it comes to bilirubin, a natural substance produced by our bodies which removes old red blood cells. If a newborn has too much bilirubin in their blood stream, they can have health problems. If newborn babies have too much bilirubin in their blood stream, that condition is known as bilirubin encephalopathy (BE). And if newborns have BE during the first few weeks of life, they could develop very serious health problems, including:
- Brain damage
- Hearing loss
Neonatal injuries involving bilirubin encephalopathy can have serious consequences. That’s why it’s important to take your child’s health issues seriously from the start.
SYMPTOMS OF KERNICTERUS/BILIRUBIN
Symptoms can vary widely and be hard to detect for bilirubin encephalopathy among newborn children. Such symptoms include:
- Jaundice
- Tiredness
- Loud crying
In the later stages of bilirubin encephalopathy, symptoms can become ever more extreme, including:
- Seizures
- Stiff muscles
- Coma
- Not eating
